Artek’s Domus chair was designed by Finnish interior architect and designer Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1946. The charming lounge chair has a comfortable and ergonomic design with a high backrest, making it a great fit in a reading nook, by a coffee table or in the home office. The short armrests help you pull the chair close to the table for both studying and dining.
Domus lounge chair was designed for the Domus Academica student housing complex, located in Helsinki and drawn by architect Pauli Salomaa. The interior and furniture design of the complex was the first large-scale project for Ilmari Tapiovaara and his wife Annikki Tapiovaara. Domus was designed to be a multifunctional chair that would meet the diverse needs of student housing. Nowadays manufactured by Artek, the chair has become a beloved classic of Finnish design, both at home and abroad.
In this special 2022 edition of the Domus armchair, two different wood types meet. The seat and the backrest of the lounge chair are made of elm, with natural wood grain patterns giving the Domus chair a lively look. The frame is made of light-coloured PEFC-certified Finnish birch that provides a soothing and harmonious contrast to the vibrant elm.
